New Zealand give two weeks time to Williamson to prove his fitness
New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson has made tremendous progress while nursing his injury that he sustained during the Indian Premier League (2023) while playing for Gujarat Titans. Williamson had picked up ACL injury which also saw him missing the entire IPL. New Zealand have given two weeks time to Williamson to prove his fitness in the run up to the ODI World Cup 2023. Williamson has made a good progress with his recovery. Williamson has been practicing in the nets as he has joined the team New Zealand who are set to play England in the four-match T20I series followed by as many ODIs.
“We’ve got about two weeks from now until we name that side,” New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said.
“We’re going to give him every chance to use that full amount of time. He’s in full rehab mode, he’s back batting in the nets again, which is great to see.
“He’s progressing really well, but there’s lot of work for him still to do to make sure he gets where we need him to be.”
Williamson’s presence will be incredibly crucial for New Zealand in the upcoming ODI World Cup which will get underway from October (5) in India. New Zealand will be facing England in the opening match of the tournament on October (5) in Ahmedabad. Teams have time until September 5 to submit their provisional squad to ICC but changes can be made till September 28.
“Of course, we want him at the World Cup, but there is that bigger picture that we want Kane Williamson fit for the rest of his career.”
“They’ll be honest conversations that Kane and I will have with each other around exactly where he is at,” Stead said.
