BCCI issues major update on captain Shubman Gill ahead of the 2nd Test
As India gear up for the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati, starting this Saturday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued an important medical update on skipper Shubman Gill. Gill, who suffered a neck injury during the first Test in Kolkata, will travel with the team — but his playing status for the match remains in doubt.
“Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day's play,” the BCCI said in a statement.
“He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team and a decision on his participation in the 2nd Test will be taken accordingly," the statement added.
Gill picked up the injury on Day 2 of the opening Test at Eden Gardens. After slog-sweeping a delivery from spinner Simon Harmer for a boundary, he immediately clutched his neck in discomfort and eventually retired hurt after facing just three balls. He was admitted to a hospital in Kolkata for scans and observation, and he took no further part in that match while undergoing medical supervision.
