IND vs SA, 2nd Test, day 4: India in deep trouble after frustrating start

India’s hopes of levelling the series suffered a major blow on Day 4 of the second Test against South Africa, as they endured a catastrophic start while chasing a monumental 549-run target at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium. At stumps, India were reeling at 27/2, leaving South Africa in complete control of the proceedings. South Africa had earlier declared their second innings at 260/5d, setting India a challenging target on a surface that has increasingly helped the bowlers. The Proteas’ declaration shows their confidence as they eye a historic series win on Indian soil.
India’s chase began on the worst note, with KL Rahul, looking to provide a steady start, falling early. Soon after, in-form opener Yashasvi Jaiswal followed him back to the pavilion. Both were taken out by Simon Harmer and Marco Jansen, respectively.
Heading into day 5 on Wednesday, India will have to deal with an enormous challenge. The responsibility now rests heavily on the experienced middle order to produce runs to keep the team’s hopes alive. Currently, nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav and Sai Sudharsan are at the crease unbeaten on 4 and 2, respectively. As things stand, South Africa are on the brink of sealing a memorable series victory, but for India they will need to fight back to take control of the game in order to push it towards a draw.
