Focus shifts to ODIs as India and South Africa meet in Ranchi

Following a historic and hard-fought Test series, the spotlight now shifts to the white-ball leg of South Africa’s tour of India. The two sides will meet in the first ODI in Ranchi on Sunday, marking the beginning of a three-match series. India enter the ODI series with a point to prove. They were squarely outplayed in the Tests, falling short in both in bowling and batting departments.
As they look to move past that disappointment, the change in format will give them a reset. However, India will have to be without their regular ODI captain, Shubman Gill, who took over as full-time skipper earlier this year. He remains sidelined with the neck sprain he suffered during the first Test in Kolkata. With Gill still recovering, KL Rahul will lead India in the series. India will be boosted with the return of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who were last during the ODI series against Australia. All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant also rejoin the side.
For South Africa, the ODI series is a chance to carry forward the confidence gained from their Test victory. South Africa's most recent ODI series defeat was against Pakistan with a second-string squad. However, prior to the Pakistan tour, South Africa clinched back-to-back ODI series victories in England and Australia. South Africa will be without premier fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, who missed the Test series due to a rib bone stress injury and has not recovered sufficiently to feature in the white-ball leg. In his absence, the Proteas would expect the trio of Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, and Nandre Burger to shoulder the pace responsibilities.
