Shubman Gill praises Shami, calls him ‘legend’
Indian young star Shubman Gill has hailed Mohammed Shami as a ‘legend' after stunning five-wicket haul in Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh on Thursday in Dubai.
Shami’s stunning return to form after a period of injury was epitomised in India’s Champions Trophy opener against Bangladesh, where he put on a spellbinding performance. Shami tore through Bangladesh’s formidable batting lineup, taking a sensational five-wicket haul, which helped India restrict Bangladesh to a manageable total of 228.
Shubman Gill, on the other hand, fired a magnificent century to lead India to a six-wicket victory.
“Whenever he comes to bowl in an ICC tournament, he doesn't take less than five wickets. Sometimes it happens that you don't even know when he's taken five wickets,” Gill said on bcci.tv.
“Mehidy performs well against us. When we were playing in the Bangladesh series, he performed well against us. But the way Shami bhai bowled those lines and lengths, he didn't let the pressure go off the new batter.”
“It meant that he had to make runs and Shami bhai kept bowling on that line and swung from there. The catch was good, as it came to me fast. The way he has come back, I think after the injury it is not easy to make a comeback, and I think he is a legend,” he said.
India’s next match is against arch-rival Pakistan, which is set to be played on Sunday in Dubai.
