New Zealand batter Lauren Down has been ruled out of the remaining two ODIs against Sri Lanka following a back injury. She has been replaced by uncapped player Izzy Sharp in the squad. The first ODI between Sri Lanka Women and New Zealand Women ended in no result due to continuous rainfall.

The second ODI will be played on Friday at Saxton Oval, Nelson. As for Down, she had picked up the injury on the morning of the first ODI in Napier and she has failed to make a complete recovery in order to play a part in the rest of the series. Down herself had earlier replaced Bella James, who had been ruled out of the series with a quadricep strain on her right leg.

New Zealand head coach Ben Sawyer said that team was feeling for Down.

“We’re all really disappointed for Lauren to be ruled out of the series. Unfortunately injuries are part of the game we wish her a speedy recovery,” Sawyer said.

“It does provide an exciting opportunity for Izzy to join the group in Nelson for these last two matches and we’re looking forward to welcoming her,” he said.
