As the countdown for the Asia Cup 2025 begins, former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has said that wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson should bat at the crucial No. 3 position. With just days to go before the tournament begins, opinions are trickling in about India's ideal playing XI. Moreover, with Shubman Gill's inclusion almost cementing his role as an opener alongside youngster Abhishek Sharma, India will need to make some tough calls about the rest of the top order.

“Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill will open in the Asia Cup. For the No. 3 spot, I feel Tilak Varma is a youngster and can wait for his turn. Sanju is an experienced batter, and he could be groomed by giving him consistent opportunities at No. 3. There is a World Cup in six months, and he deserves a chance," Kaif said on Instagram.

Samson has been in solid form over the past year or so, delivering consistent performances. Kaif, meanwhile, highlighted Samson's batting prowess in the shortest format, lauding his ability to smash big sixes.

“He is among the top 10 six-hitters in the IPL. That's why I believe when Rashid Khan comes to bowl in the middle overs, there cannot be a better player against him than Sanju, as he can hit sixes down the ground. South Africa has one of the toughest conditions for batting, and he has hit two centuries as an opener there. He plays both pace and spin well, and in the IPL, he scores 400-500 runs every year."

India will commence their Asia Cup campaign on September 10 against UAE under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav. The match will be played at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.
