Shreyas Iyer speaks on Asia Cup snub
Indian batter Shreyas Iyer, accepting the selector's decision, has for the first time spoken out about his omission from India's Asia Cup 2025 squad. Despite coming off a jaw-dropping IPL 2025, Iyer failed to get a place in India's squad for the Asia Cup, which will begin on September 9 in the UAE. His omission touched off a great deal of discussion, with many former cricketers voicing their disappointment over his absence. However, showing maturity, Iyer said that it is crucial to back the players who have consistently been contributing to the team's success.
"It is only frustrating when you know that you deserve to be in the team, in the playing XI. At that time, it is frustrating. But at the same time, when you know that someone is performing and playing consistently for the team and bringing their best, you support them. And eventually, the goal is for the team to win. When the team is winning, everyone is happy," Iyer said on iQOO podcast.
"But as I keep talking about integrity, even if you don't get a chance, you have to see to it that you do your work ethically. It's not like you do it only when someone is watching. Even when no one is watching, you have to keep doing your work," he said.
Shreyas Iyer has been out of action for India in the shortest format since 2024; however, he was expected to play a crucial role for the team at the Asia Cup due to his imperious form in the IPL but his omission did not let it happen. Notably, in the IPL 2025, Iyer bludgeoned 604 runs in 17 matches, emerging as the sixth-highest run-getter. Meanwhile, India will begin their Asia Cup 2025 campaign on September 10 by taking on the United Arab Emirates at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.
