Washington Sundar out of T20I series against New Zealand

Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of the five-match T20I series against New Zealand, dealing a crushing blow ahead of the T20I World Cup 2026. The series against New Zealand, scheduled to be played from January 21 to 31, is being seen as a crucial phase in India’s build-up to the global tournament, which begins on February 7.
"Washington Sundar has been ruled out from T20 series vs NZ due to side strain," a BCCI official told PTI.
Washington Sundar was recently ruled out of the ongoing ODI series after suffering a side strain he sustained during the first ODI against New Zealand in Vadodara last week. The Indian team management has opted not to rush him back, prioritising his full fitness ahead of the World Cup.
Sundar’s absence will be a big setback for India, as he has featured regularly for India in T20Is in recent times. Overall, Sundar has played 58 T20Is for India, having 51 wickets from 54 innings.
