"Never wanted to be selfless": Sanju Samson

Indian wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson has been making headlines since his defining performances at the 2026 T20 World Cup, where India clinched the title, beating New Zealand in the final. The wicketkeeper-batsman emerged as one of the standout performers of the tournament, contributing heavily to the team's success. His contributions not only powered India to glory but also earned him the prestigious Player of the Tournament award. Notably, Samson’s batting throughout the competition reflected sheer composure and great intent.
In all situations, Samson displayed an incredible temperament, handling the situation pretty well. Recently, speaking on India's title win, Samson highlighted that there has been the mindset of collective success rather than individual achievements. According to Samson, the leadership group within the dressing room has fostered an environment where the primary focus is on winning matches rather than chasing personal milestones.
"That’s the way everyone is thinking now. It was a conscious decision brought in by our captain and coach in the dressing room. The constant message from our leaders to the group is that the team should come first and individual milestones should come second," Samson said during an interaction with the media.
“That automatically got drilled into each and every one of us in the team and that’s how we started reacting in every game," he added.
He reiterated his commitment to staying true to his style of play, which helped him contribute greatly to the team's cause.
“Honestly, I think that’s the true nature. I never wanted to be selfless. I think I’ve always wanted to be myself. So myself brings a lot of different qualities, a lot of strengths and a lot of weaknesses," he said.
