""Tough time, we have to stay together": Indian captain Harmanpreet after team's back-to-back defeats against South Africa

India captain Harmanpreet Kaur remains confident despite the team’s recent struggles in the shortest format, asserting that there is no cause for alarm as they build toward the upcoming Women's T20 World Cup. India’s current form in T20Is has been below par. Their latest setback came in Durban, where South Africa secured a comfortable eight-wicket victory, handing India their second straight loss in the ongoing five-match series.

Despite recent struggles, Harmanpreet expressed optimism in the team's ability to bounce back brilliantly ahead of the T20I World Cup 2026 in June. In the second T20I, India, after being asked to bat, were folded for 147 in 20 overs, with Shafali Verma being the top scorer with 57 off 38 balls. India's other experienced batter failed to make gains, losing wickets in quick succession.

“I think with bat, we were not able to contribute the way we wanted. Unfortunately, last 10 overs of the innings, we did not bat well. I think that's something which we need to consider and think about how we have to go about next three matches. Bowling-wise also, Powerplay is not going our way. As a team it's a tough time; we have to stay together," Harmanpreet said at the post-match presentation.

"When you’re not getting the shots, rotating strike is a key point. We were discussing if we could keep rotating the strike and it can help us through that time. But unfortunately we were not able to do that. It's a time when things didn’t work. You have to stay together and think how you have to go in next games," she said.

Harmanpreet, meanwhile, praised Shafali Verma for standing tall and helping the side with runs.

"Shafali has been a great talent for us. She is an attacking batter, doing her job in the first six overs. Hopefully, she will continue and keep giving us the starts the way she is doing," Harmanpreet added.
