"I told him..." Suresh Raina on MS Dhoni's future in IPL

Sunrisers Hyderabad handed CSK a crushing five-wicket defeat in what was the franchise’s final home game of the season on Monday. Still, despite the disappointment, one moment rose above the loss after legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni, absent throughout the season because of injury concerns, finally walked onto the field at Chepauk. After joining the squad for the traditional team photograph, Dhoni made his way around the ground for a lap of honour, waving to the fans.
Dhoni also reunited with former teammate Suresh Raina, who was present at the venue in his role as a commentator. Raina shared a warm interaction with the former CSK captain, bringing back memories of one of the most successful partnerships in IPL history. Meanwhile, the most talked-about moment came later when Raina opened up about a private conversation he had with Dhoni regarding a possible comeback next year.
"I told him 'you have given IPL 2026 a missed call. It won't count. You have to come back next year'. He said 'my body is a little weak' - I said 'we are not believing anything. You have to play next year'. It's his personal call. I think he is positive. The team is also gelling well again," Raina said while speaking on Star Sports.
Notably, Dhoni has not featured in any match for Chennai Super Kings during IPL 2026 due to a calf strain suffered ahead of the tournament. Ahead of CSK's match against SRH on Monday, there were speculations that Dhoni could return for CSK’s final game of the season, but he missed out. Talking about CSK's campaign this season, they have won 6 off 13 games, making things utterly complicated for themselves in their race for the playoffs.
