Mitchell Starc overtakes Sri Lanka legend Rangana Herath to create massive Test record
Australia’s star bowler Mitchell Starc created a humongous record during day one of the first Test between Australia and Bangladesh on Thursday in Darwin, becoming the only left-arm bowler to claim most Test wickets. In doing so, he overtook Sri Lankan legend Rangana Herath to claim the record.
Starc reached the landmark achievement after capturing the wicket of Bangladesh batter Shadman Islam, who was gone for 20 after being caught by Nathan Lyon. Starc now possesses 434 Test wickets from 106 matches. Talking about the match, Australia, after deciding to bat, struggled to deal with Bangladesh bowlers as they were rolled for 198.
Veteran batter Steve Smith top scored for Australia with 71 to provide a little resistance. However, he lacked much-needed support from other batters, with promising players Cameron Green and Jake Weatherald losing their wickets for 13 and 23, respectively. Bangladesh were 96-1 in return on day 1 at stumps, with Mominul Haque and Tanzid Hasan finishing on 35 and 32, respectively. Largely, the day belonged to Bangladesh, who outshone Australia in almost all departments.
