“He has temporarily sealed the No.3 spot”; Rahane lauds Devdutt Padikkal
Indian batter Devdutt Padikkal pounced on the landed opportunity, showing the batting brilliance he could bring to India’s Test side. Given a chance after Sai Sudharsan was ruled out due to injury, Padikkal responded in emphatic fashion, turning his chance in Sri Lanka into one of the most impressive individual performances of the series. He was already high on confidence after a powerful domestic campaign for Karnataka.
Across three innings, Padikkal scored 328 runs at an outstanding average of 109.33. His runs included two hundreds, with his highest score being a commanding 167. Meanwhile, former India batter Ajinkya Rahane was among those impressed by Padikkal’s performance. Rahane believed Padikkal had done enough in Sri Lanka to strengthen his claim for the No. 3 position, at least for the immediate future.
"I think he has temporarily sealed the No.3 spot. This is his own hard work, and I am happy with his performance. When they go to New Zealand, the conditions will be different, and preparation will have to be different. But for now, we can celebrate these two centuries," Rahane said on his YouTube channel.
Rahane also lauded Padikka’s game awareness, lauding his determination and skillset to tremendously dominate Sri Lanka bowlers.
"The way Padikkal batted in both games, one thing was visible that how you look to dominate bowlers while playing at number three, and he did that. Scoring back-to-back hundreds is not easy. It is always important to be decisive as a batter, and he showed that. The intent was there. He had all the shots. He got the opportunity, and he presented his case by batting with authority and the way he scored runs. He read the situation well," he added.
