Babar Azam returns to domestic cricket
Pakistan Test captain Babar Azam made his comeback to domestic cricket for the first time in six years, featuring for the Oil and Gas Development team in the third round of the President's Cup, which got underway on Thursday. Notably, Babar’s last appearance in domestic cricket was back in 2019.
Notably, Babar Azam has endured a torrid run of form since taking over Pakistan’s Test captaincy, as he has been unable to live up to the expectations and maintain the batting brilliance that has made him a superstar. He returned to the Test captaincy in July, replacing Shan Masood. However, his tenure has encountered a rocky start, with Pakistan suffering a 3-0 series defeat in the three-match Test assignment against England.
He missed the first Test due to injury, but his return in the second and third matches could not make much of a difference, as he scored 97 runs across 4 innings. Pakistan’s upcoming Test assignment is against Sri Lanka, where they will host the island nation in a two-match series, beginning on November 9 in Rawalpindi.
