West Indies in freefall as Gill, Rohit help India pull off monster chase
Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma stood tall for India, plundering superb knocks of 223* and 101 to help India pull off a stunning chase of 406 runs and defeat West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI on Wednesday in Guwahati to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series. Both Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma dominated the chase, attacking West Indies bowlers with sheer elegance and helping India overhaul the target in 43.3 overs.
Young talent Shubman Gill lit up the chase with a magnificent double century. The Indian captain played with incredible composure throughout his innings, dishing out classy boundaries. Gill scored his double hundred off 117 balls, registering a new record for the fastest double century in ODI cricket. His innings also made him the only second batter after Rohit Sharma to slam more than one ODI double hundred. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma, who did not have a good outing in the first ODI, showed his class with a breathtaking innings of 101.
Earlier, the West Indies had set an excellent platform for themselves after being asked to bat, posting 405/7 in 50 overs. Opener John Campbell blasted an explosive century, reaching three figures in 65 balls. His innings became the fastest ODI hundred by a West Indies batter against India. Captain Shai Hope also played a crucial role, scoring 104 off 94 balls. Amir Jangoo also racked up a spectacular knock of 114 off 77 balls.
