Australia batter Steve Smith was assessed for concussion on the fourth day of the opening Test against South Africa in Durban on Monday after being hit on the helmet by a sharp delivery from fast bowler Anrich Nortje. The incident occurred during Smith’s innings when a sharp delivery from Nortje hit the helmet.

Following the impact, the team’s medical staff immediately rushed to examine Smith on the field in order to ensure he was fit to continue. After the assessment by the team physiotherapist and doctor, Smith’s helmet was replaced, and he continued his batting. However, Smith was dismissed for 27 runs, and later when South Africa’s innings began, Smith was not on the field.

“I’ve got no ideal. I’ve not seen him since I’ve been off the pitch, so I’m hoping he’s OK,” Beau Webster said at the press conference.

“He obviously copped a nasty knock in the head there. Yeah, wishing him all the best, and hopefully he’s back out with us either tomorrow or in the next Test.”

Notably, Smith has a history with concussions, having gone through this so many times in his career. Meanwhile. On day four South Africa were 102/4 in chase of Australia’s 421.
