Mohit Avasthi's five-wicket haul powers Mumbai to innings victory over Himachal Pradesh

Mohit Avasthi starred with the ball as Mumbai registered an emphatic innings and 97-run victory over Himachal Pradesh in their Elite Group D Ranji Trophy match at the Luhnu Cricket Ground in Bilaspur on Wednesday. The Mumbai seamer claimed five wickets for 44 runs in 16 overs, recording the seventh five-wicket haul of his first-class career. The victory took Mumbai to the top of the Elite Group D points table with 14 points from two matches.
Resuming their second innings at 144 for three, Himachal Pradesh showed considerable resilience after being bowled out inside 40 overs in their first innings. The hosts battled for 99.1 overs to reach 291, but their efforts were not enough to prevent a heavy defeat. Wicketkeeper-batter Vaibhav Kalta and captain Pukhraj Mann led the resistance, putting together an 85-run partnership off 197 balls for the fourth wicket. However, Mumbai broke the stand when Mann was caught by Musheer Khan off Tushar Deshpande.
Avasthi struck soon after lunch, dismissing Arpit Guleria, who scored six runs, with Musheer taking another catch. Mumbai then completed the remaining formalities to seal the victory. Apart from Avasthi's outstanding spell, Deshpande claimed two wickets for 60 runs to finish the match with figures of six for 162. Left-arm spinner Shams Mulani also contributed with two wickets for 52 runs.
The comprehensive win underlined Mumbai's strong start to the Ranji Trophy campaign. With back-to-back victories and bonus points, the team has moved into a commanding position in Elite Group D.
