Australian Umpire Ben Treloar makes Ranji Trophy debut in India

Australian umpire Ben Treloar made his Ranji Trophy debut during the Delhi vs Gujarat match at the Palam Air Force B Ground under the umpire exchange programme between Cricket Australia (CA) and the BCCI. The match ended in a high-scoring draw, with Delhi declaring at 648/6 and Gujarat scoring 479 runs. Treloar officiated for 318.5 overs over four days in temperatures reaching around 33 degrees Celsius.
The 45-year-old described his experience in India as challenging but enjoyable. He said umpiring in unfamiliar conditions helped him learn more about the game and improve his skills. Treloar also highlighted the challenges of umpiring on a black-soil pitch, where the ball became slower and sometimes stayed low. He thanked fellow umpire Vinod Seshan and match referee Arjan Kripal Singh for helping him adjust to the Ranji Trophy environment. Treloar will next officiate in the third-round Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Haryana at the BKC ground in Mumbai. He is looking forward to the challenge of officiating in conditions where spinners could play an important role.
From Cricket Player to Experienced Umpire
Treloar began playing cricket at the age of 11. At 16, he took a Laws of Cricket course with his father, which sparked his interest in umpiring. After playing club cricket in Australia and England, he decided at the age of 23 to focus on officiating. He later completed his Level 2 umpiring course in New South Wales. After initially playing cricket on Saturdays and umpiring on Sundays, he eventually gave up playing to become a full-time umpire. He has now been officiating for 21 years. Under the exchange programme, Indian umpire Parashar Joshi will travel to Australia to officiate in two Sheffield Shield matches and one One-Day Cup match.
