Tilak Varma created history in the second T20 International between India and New Zealand on Saturday, setting a new world record for the most catches in men's T20Is in a calendar year. Meanwhile, teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi returned to India's playing XI, adding another talking point ahead of the encounter. Tilak achieved the milestone within the first three overs of New Zealand's innings at Hagley Oval in Christchurch. He took the catches of Tim Seifert and Daryl Mitchell, reaching 26 catches in T20Is in 2026 and surpassing Indonesia's Danilson Hawoe, who previously held the record with 25 catches.

Tilak's record-breaking performance came through two important catches early in New Zealand's innings. He first caught Tim Seifert off Arshdeep Singh before completing another catch to dismiss Daryl Mitchell off Bhuvneshwar Kumar. With these two dismissals, Tilak moved to the top of the list for the most catches in men's T20Is in a calendar year.

India also welcomed back 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for the second T20I. The youngster was included in the side in place of Ishan Kishan, who was unavailable due to a groin injury. Sooryavanshi's inclusion attracted considerable attention, with the teenage batter getting another opportunity to showcase his talent at the international level. He was expected to bat at number three, although India could also consider pairing him with Abhishek Sharma at the top of the order.

India made another change to their bowling attack, bringing in Prince Yadav in place of Mayank Yadav. India won the toss and elected to bowl first, repeating their decision from the opening match of the series.

The first T20I produced a high-scoring thriller, with 455 runs scored across both innings. India chased down the target to secure a four-wicket victory with two balls remaining, registering their highest successful run chase in men's T20I cricket.
