Bhuvneshwar Kumar has revealed that returning to the Indian team was never an obsession, saying that his performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL) did the talking and led to his comeback to the Indian team. Kumar earned an India recall after being on the sidelines for nearly four years. His impressive performances for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) played a greater role in the franchise’s back-to-back IPL title wins. He claimed 17 wickets during the IPL 2025 and returned with 28 wickets in 2026.

"To tell you the truth, I did not chase. Yes, it is a dream. I am not saying that I am not happy. I am very happy. To play for India, to represent India, it is a matter of pride," Kumar said at the press conference.

"So, I am feeling very proud that I made a comeback. But the truth is that I did not chase it. For four years, whatever was coming in front of me - tournaments, challenges, whatever - about cricket, about fitness, whatever else, I kept doing it. Never once did it cross my mind that I had to play cricket for a comeback."

"So I think that made things very easy. Luckily, the performance happened. I think all the credit goes to my two years of IPL."

Bhuvneshwar said that he is not looking too far ahead and will return to domestic cricket following the New Zealand series.

"I am not thinking too far ahead. I am happy with what I am getting. Of course, I will play domestic cricket, whether it is Vijay Hazare or Mushtaq Ali. I mean, I am looking forward to that," he said.

In the ongoing five-match T20I series against New Zealand, India are leading by 3-0 after decimating New Zealand in the first three games.
