Ranji Trophy: Meghalaya overhaul squad amid internal association dispute

Meghalaya cricket has been thrown into turmoil following an internal power struggle within the Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA), resulting in an overnight change to the state's squad for the fourth round of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy Plate League.
The Meghalaya High Court recently ruled in favour of MCA president James Sangma, upholding the suspension of secretary Rayonald Kharkamni and declaring the original squad illegal. The court also invalidated team selections made by the rival Apex Council faction.
Kharkamni was suspended following complaints alleging that he had failed to act on sexual-harassment complaints from players of the state's Under-23 women's team.
The controversy escalated ahead of Meghalaya's October 2 match against Nagaland in Shillong. Players from the original squad arrived at the ground but were informed by match referee Arindam Sarkar that the BCCI had registered a new squad and they would not be allowed to play.
The newly assembled side struggled, getting bowled out for 144 in response to Nagaland's 254. The players reportedly had little preparation time, with only Akash Choudhary having played a red-ball match during the ongoing season.
The new squad featured three guest professionals – Jiwanjot Singh, Srinivas Sharath and Akshay Karnewar, with former Punjab opener Jiwanjot appointed captain. Meanwhile, the dropped players remain uncertain about their future, with no official communication from the BCCI regarding the remaining Ranji Trophy fixtures.
Meghalaya are not the only northeastern team facing administrative troubles. Arunachal Pradesh also forfeited their opening Ranji Trophy match against Nagaland due to factional disputes, prompting the BCCI to form a three-member committee to select teams for the remainder of the season.
