"We've become complacent": Matthew Hayden raises concerns over Australian cricket

Former Australian opener Matthew Hayden has criticised the country's Test setup, suggesting that prolonged success has led to complacency among administrators, coaches and players. His comments come after Australia lost their No. 1 position in the ICC Test rankings following their series defeat to South Africa.

Speaking to SEN, Hayden called for greater accountability across the system and stressed that responsibility should not rest solely with those who build the team but also with those who execute the plans."The success, I feel, of this current group has probably made us a little complacent at all levels. It doesn't matter where you look at it - administration, the so-called architects of the team, the coaches and significant staff," Hayden said.

Despite acknowledging Australia's impressive World Test Championship record, which includes one title and three final appearances, Hayden believes the current cycle has become more competitive. Australia are currently third with 69.23 per cent points, having slipped from above 80 per cent before the South Africa tour. Hayden also highlighted the importance of the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India and the Ashes, saying, "We've got the Border-Gavaskar Trophy coming up, and we all know how difficult it is to compete in India. Then we've got the Ashes after that."

He further urged Australian cricket's administration to focus on building a sustainable future, concluding, "This is a really important moment for the Australian cricket team and the wider administration to understand how we're going to future-proof cricket in this great country."
