West Indies name squad for South Africa series
West Indies have come out with their 15-member squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against South Africa, with Brandon King set to lead the side in the absence of Rovman Powell. Regular skipper Rovman Powell is not scheduled to captain the team due to his involvement in the ongoing Indian Premier League in India.
Other top-notch players Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran have been rested. And also, Alzarri Joseph, Shimron Hetmyer, Andre Russell and Sherfane Rutherford are in India playing IPL. This is the last assignment West Indies will be playing ahead of the upcoming T20I World Cup 2024. The first T20I will be played on 23rd May followed by second and third on 25th and 26th May respectively.
West Indies chief selector Desmond Haynes believes that this series will give the players an opportunity to polish their skills.
“These are among the last competitive T20 International matches before the start of the World Cup. Players have the opportunity to fine-tune their skills and ensure they are as prepared as they can be for the World Cup, whether they are in the final squad or reserve pool," he said.
West Indies head coach Daren Sammy also spoke on the importance of having this series.
"We have not played together as a team since the Australia series, but we just completed a very high-intensity training camp in Antigua. Now we have the chance to integrate some of our players returning from the IPL and build some momentum as a group going into the World Cup."
