Australia’s veteran off-spinner Nathan Lyon has accomplished a remarkable milestone in his distinguished Test career, moving into sixth place on the all-time list of leading wicket-takers in the longest format of the game. The 38-year-old surpassed great pace bowler Glenn McGrath’s tally of 563 Test wickets.

Lyon reached the landmark in style with the crucial dismissals of Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett on day two of the third Ashes Test in Adelaide on Thursday. With this achievement, Lyon now sits behind only one Australian in Test wicket-taking history – the legendary Shane Warne, who finished his career with 708 wickets.

Globally, only four other bowlers have claimed more Test scalps than Lyon. Sri Lanka’s Muthiah Muralidaran (800), England’s James Anderson (704) and Stuart Broad (604), and India’s Anil Kumble (619) are the only other legendary bowlers to have more wickets than Lyon in Test cricket's history
