The Government of Karnataka has granted permission for the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium to host matches during the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season, putting an end to months of uncertainty surrounding the venue’s future.

The stadium had been under scrutiny since June 2025 after Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s maiden IPL title celebrations turned tragic when a stampede broke out during the team’s victory parade. The incident raised serious concerns about crowd management and infrastructure capacity.

"In the interest of the sport and its fans, the Cabinet today has taken an important decision to permit the conduct of IPL matches at Chinnaswamy Stadium, while keeping public safety paramount," Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced on X.

"The recommendations of the Justice John Michael D'Cunha Report will be implemented, with strict adherence to norms on ticketing, crowd regulation, and stadium access. With responsibility and accountability, we move forward."

In the aftermath, authorities had deemed the venue unsafe for large-scale sporting events, with competitive cricket being put on hold indefinitely as investigations were launched and safety audits conducted. Notably, 11 people had lost their lives during the stampede.
