Ravichandran Ashwin expresses concern over Samson's form

Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has shared his views on Sanju Samson’s recent form, saying that the right-hander appears to be “searching for some runs” despite showing positive signs at the crease. Samson featured in India’s playing XI for the T20 World Cup clash against Namibia at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Thursday.

His inclusion came after Abhishek Sharma was ruled out of the match due to a stomach infection. Making his T20 World Cup debut, Samson wasted no time in making an impact. He launched into the Namibian attack with authority, smashing three towering sixes in a whirlwind start. He raced to 22 runs off eight deliveries.

However, his promising innings was cut short in the second over when Namibia pacer Ben Shikongo dismissed him. Meanwhile, Ashwin, who retired from international cricket in December 2024 after a distinguished career across formats, asserted that the team management would be closely monitoring the fitness of Abhishek Sharma ahead of India’s high-voltage clash against Pakistan on February 15 in Colombo.

"Sanju Samson looks like a batter who is searching for runs. There are many things going on in his mind. The team really backed him and gave the opportunity again. But they will be hoping for Abhishek Sharma's comeback, because he is a big player," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin expressed concern, saying that Sanju lacked clarity in his mind. He advised the batter to play freely and don't think much.

"Samson first flicked a ball on the leg for a six. The timing was good and intent was right. But the next time, he just tapped it, there was a mid-wicket as well, and he just tapped. That looked like someone who is not very clear in his head. It looked like he had premeditated where he wanted to hit the ball. In many ways, a lot of players go through his mental state. It is important to address that. If I am going and telling him something, I would tell him to forget everything and take it as a fresh day. I want that Samson who scores a 100. Even if you are out, it is okay. Play freely and don't think a lot," Ashwin said.
