Rampaging India down Zimbabwe in thrilling Super 8 battle

India raced to a commanding victory, overpowering Zimbabwe by 72 runs in their must-win Super Eight clash of the T20 World Cup at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on Thursday. Asked to bat, India unleashed a batting masterclass, piling up a staggering total of 256/4 in 20 overs — their highest-ever total in T20 World Cup history and the biggest score recorded in the tournament overall. Abhishek Sharma played a superb innings.
After a difficult start to the tournament that saw him dismissed for three consecutive ducks, Abhishek roared back to form, smashing 55 off 30 deliveries. Hardik Pandya produced an explosive knock lower the order. The all-rounder unleashed a brutal assault, hammering an unbeaten 50 off 23 balls. Tilak Varma produced a breathtaking cameo of 44 not out from 16 balls.
Chasing a big target of 257, Zimbabwe had a great start. Opener Brian Bennett played a sensational knock, taking the attack to India’s bowlers with a fearless approach. Bennett remained unbeaten on a superb 97, falling short of a well-deserved century. His innings kept Zimbabwe in the hunt, but the shortage of substantial partnerships at the other end cost Zimbabwe dearly as they closed at 184/6 in 20 overs.
