The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will begin their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 campaign without their iconic leader MS Dhoni, with the franchise confirming that he will miss the opening phase of the season.

CSK revealed that Dhoni is currently recovering from a calf strain and is undergoing rehabilitation. While the team has not ruled him out entirely, his availability for the first few matches remains uncertain. This announcement comes just two days before CSK’s opening fixture against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Monday.

"MS Dhoni is currently undergoing rehabilitation for a calf strain. As a result, he is likely to miss the first two weeks of TATA IPL 2026," CSK said in a statement on social media.

With Dhoni out of action for two weeks, wicketkeeping duties are expected to be handled by Sanju Samson. Meanwhile, the absence of the legendary Dhoni could impact the team in terms of experience. Notably, the franchise has not specified a clear recovery timeline for him.

Now, as IPL 2026 kicks off on March 28, there have also been discussions whether this season might mark Dhoni’s final appearance as a player. Dhoni belongs to an exclusive group of players who have featured in all 19 seasons of the IPL so far. The others in this elite list include Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Manish Pandey.
