Bangladesh lifts ban on IPL broadcast ahead of IPL 2026

Bangladesh has lifted the ban on the broadcast of the Indian Premier League (IPL), with Bangladesh’s newly appointed Information and Broadcasting Minister, Zahir Uddin Swapan, confirming that there are now no restrictions on telecasting the IPL within the country. The decision comes as the 2026 IPL season begins on March 28.
"No one applied to us to telecast the IPL. We don't want to mix politics with sport. We will look at it from a commercial perspective, and if any channel applies to telecast the IPL, we will consider it positively," Swapan was quoted as saying by Deutsche Welle.
"We will not bar anyone from telecasting it. If Star Sports want to telecast it, they can. If any of our channels want to telecast it, we will take it positively, but we will not force anything," he said.
The ban on IPL broadcasts was imposed in January 2026 amid rising tensions between Bangladesh and India. The trigger for the controversy was the removal of Bangladeshi fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders squad following directions from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Meanwhile, the opening match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) will see defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru face Sunrisers Hyderabad at M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday.
