Sunil Gavaskar backs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi to make India debut

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has backed teenage prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for the India debut, highlighting his hugely dominant performances in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). Sooryavanshi has taken the IPL 2026 by storm, producing sensational knocks innings after innings, forming the backbone of RR's batting unit. The 15-year-old talent has no sign of fear, taking on experienced bowlers with brutal authority.
So far, he has smacked 680 runs in 15 innings, maintaining an astonishing strike rate of 242.85. Moreover, he played a stunningly instrumental knock of 97 in the Eliminator between Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, launching his side into Qualifier 2 of the tournament. Meanwhile, Gavaskar believes that the star batter should not be overlooked, given his daring approach regardless of the bowler.
"He is definitely ready to play T20I cricket, and I hope that he will be selected in the T20I squad for the England series. If you don't select him even after this outstanding performance, then when will you select him? Don't go by his age because the way he is hitting bowlers 15 years older than him is remarkable. Even he is hitting bowlers with 15 years of international experience. Don't look at his age; just look at the fearless approach with which he is playing," Gavaskar said on Sports Tak.
During his innings against SRH in the eliminator, Sooryavanshi broke one of the most cherished IPL records held by the legendary Chris Gayle. Vaibhav struck 12 sixes, taking his tally of sixes to 65 in IPL 2026, which helped him overtake Gayle’s long-standing record of 59 sixes. His 97 also happened to be the second-highest individual score of the season. The dazzling knock helped him equal the record for the fastest fifty ever scored in IPL knockout history.
