"I was disappointed, not just initially": Brendon McCullum after his exit as England Test coach

Having stepped down as England's head coach in the longest format, Brendon McCullum admitted that his tenure did not deliver the major series victories that both he and England supporters had hoped for. Reflecting on his time as head coach, McCullum expressed regret over the team's inability to consistently overcome their biggest rivals and admitted that it is time for a fresh face to guide the Test side forward.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed McCullum's departure from the Test coaching role on Sunday, ending a four-year journey that produced 27 Test victories, 20 defeats and two draws. However, he will continue to remain in his role as England's white-ball coach. When McCullum took the reins back in 2022, England thrived in Test cricket, winning 11 of their first 13 matches.

But, in recent times, things have been incredibly challenging, with England struggling to perform up to the standards. And they recently succumbed to a 2-1 home series defeat to New Zealand that majorly contributed to McCullum's removal.

"I got a tap on the shoulder. I was disappointed, not just initially, but at the same time I fully respect the decision. We're in a results business, and our results weren't good enough. Fundamentally, it's time for someone else to have a go," McCullum said at the press conference.

“Fundamentally, we just weren’t quite able to win those big series. The series against India and Australia – the two marquee series. And for that I guess I can only say sorry," he said.

McCullum also thanked the ECB for giving him the opportunity to coach the England men's Test team.

"That's probably for other people to assess. From my point of view, I've absolutely loved the last four years. I've felt incredibly privileged to be England's men's Test head coach. I feel over the course of 20-odd years in this sport, the last four years have been possibly the biggest highlight I've had."

"I've always been incredibly grateful for the opportunity; I've felt humbled to be in that position and fundamentally wanted to get the best outcome for English cricket, for all those that support the team."
