AUS vs BAN, 1st Test: Australia slump to humiliating loss against mighty tigers
Bangladesh have humiliated Australia with one of the most memorable Test victories in their history, overwhelming Australia by nine wickets in Darwin on Sunday to seal a superb win in the first Test to take a 1-0 lead. The victory is historic because Bangladesh, who, on their first tour of Australia in 22 years, totally outclassed Australia, bringing the match to an end inside four days. Earlier, Australia, deciding to bat, surrendered to Bangladesh’s strangling bowling attack, being bowled out for 198. Steve Smith stood virtually alone amid the collapse, fighting his way to a superb 71.
Bangladesh, in reply, piled up a commanding total of 426, taking a lead of 228 runs and putting Australia on the ropes. For Bangladesh, Tanzid Hasan blasted 101, and he received brilliant support from Najmul Hossain Shanto and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, who brought up 84 and 65, respectively. Australia, in their second innings, were under the pump as they had the task of fighting their way back into a match that had begun slipping away.
Cameron Green, bringing up his long-awaited maiden Test hundred at home, handed Australia a much-needed lifeline in the second innings. His noteworthy 104 was the standout performance in an otherwise highly disappointing batting performance. Green's century helped Australia avoid an innings defeat, but the rest of the lineup could not offer substantial support, with Australia being folded for 284, setting Bangladesh 57 runs to win.
Notably, Bangladesh all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz throughout the match remained the major threat to Australia with his exceptional bowling performance.
