India women gear up to begin Asia Cup campaign as they target eighth title
The tenth edition of the Women's Asia Cup is going on in full swing, with eight teams vying for the title. For the first time, the tournament is being played in the United Arab Emirates, with the Dubai International Cricket Stadium set to host every match. Meanwhile, India women are set to begin their campaign by facing Thailand women in match 3 of the tournament on Sunday. India's record in the Women's Asia Cup is extraordinary. Across the tournament's nine previous editions, they have lifted the trophy seven times. They have been hugely consistent, having reached the final in every edition they have played.
The one recent exception came in 2024, when Sri Lanka women broke India's winning run and secured their first Asia Cup title. Harmanpreet Kaur remains at the helm, with Smriti Mandhana continuing as vice-captain. Both players have been central figures in India's Asia Cup success over the years. Thailand will enter the match with some early momentum, having already featured in the tournament opener against Hong Kong, China, where they claimed a six-run win. India have a solid batting attack, featuring the likes of Shafali Verma, Bharti Fulmali and Richa Ghosh.
The biggest concern, however, is the loss of Rodrigues, who has been ruled out after suffering a right hamstring injury during the recently completed Hundred Women competition. India's bowling is also strong with the presence of Arundhati Reddy and Renuka Singh Thakur, Kranti Gaud and Nandni Sharma. Moreover, Deepti Sharma will be expected to shoulder spin responsibilities.
