IPL star slams tournament's Impact Player rule
The Indian Premier League’s Impact Player rule has received more backlash than backing since its introduction back in 2023. The latest figure to voice his concern is former India and Chennai Super Kings star Suresh Raina, who has questioned its effect on the balance between bat and ball. Raina feels that the rule has tilted the tournament too heavily in favour of batters.
Raina further believed that bowlers are being placed at a disadvantage as teams have the flexibility of bringing an additional specialist batter into their playing XI. As per the Impact Player rule, teams can make a tactical substitution during a match as per the situation. Due to this rule, scoring rates in the IPL have reached unprecedented levels, with teams even going past 250.
“I am against the Impact player rule. A lot of fit players also bat and just sit down. How will you improve?” Raina said on the podcast with former India batter Aakash Chopra.
“There is nothing left for the bowlers. You see, earlier, 170 was a competitive score, but now 250 is being chased as well. Even 300 is being scored. Leave something for the bowlers. There is no wicket-taking option. The batters don't get out, and with extra batters, there will be pressure on the bowlers,” Raina said.
Raina also supported the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) decision to not allow Indian players to participate in overseas leagues, asserting that the IPL in itself is a big league.
“I feel Indian players shouldn’t be allowed now. Our league has become very big. When we used to go on Australia and England tours before, I used to ask this. I had come close to playing as well, but then they said no," Raina said.
