“Same old story”: Ex-Indian cricketer on Women's Asia Cup trophy row
India’s spectacular title victory at the Women’s Asia Cup was completely overshadowed by the post-match presentation conundrum after the Indian team chose not to accept the championship trophy from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi. Indian women registered a comfortable victory over Sri Lanka in the final to win a record eighth Asia Cup title.
Following India’s victory, when the presentation ceremony began, Indian players did not come forward to receive the trophy because Mohsin Naqvi was present on the stage. It mirrored the controversy that was seen during the men's Asia Cup final last. That time too the Indian men's team had refused to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. Meanwhile, Indian women declined to accept the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s interior minister, due to ongoing political tensions between the neighbouring nations.
According to reports, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia revealed that the BCCI had communicated this decision to the ACC before the final, making it clear that the team would abstain from the ceremony if Naqvi was involved. Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Madan Lal has asserted that India should stop playing Pakistan if this sort of situation continues to prevail.
“Once again same old story. If we are going to behave like this, then we should not play Pakistan any trophies. I know its Board decision,” Madan Lal wrote on X
Talking about the match, India, batting first, posted 183-5 following strong performances from Smriti Mandhana (59) and Shafali Verma (68) at the top. Defending the total, India bowled Sri Lanka out for 111, with spinner Shree Charani returning with 4-20. Meanwhile, runners-up Sri Lanka received their medals.
