Asian Games 2026: India and Afghanistan clash in high-stakes quarter-final
India and Afghanistan will cross paths in the quarter-final of the Asian Games on Monday at Korogi Sports Park, with the winner securing a place in the semi-finals and the loser getting knocked out of the tournament. Their previous meeting, during the 2023 Asian Games, was interrupted due to rain. Afghanistan had reached 112/5 after 18.2 overs when relentless rain brought an end to the proceedings.
In the wake of rain and no play possible, India had been awarded the gold medal because of their high ranking, while Afghanistan received silver. This time there is no similar route because a result is important to advance further. India head into the quarter-final without having played a match in the main tournament, having been granted a direct entry into this stage.
Afghanistan, on the other hand, have already played twice, giving the side a valuable time to get familiar with the conditions. Darwish Rasooli leads the side, while players like Mohammad Akram, Mohammad Ishaq, Nangeyalia Kharote, Arab Gul and Abdollah Ahmadzai will be crucial.
India, meanwhile, will be buoyed by the fact that they completed a 3-0 T20I series sweep against Afghanistan earlier this month, with Abhishek Sharma being the top scorer. Sanju Samson also made a useful contribution, and they both are in the squad.
