Kohli, Gill centuries fire India to sensational win over West Indies
Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli blasted sensational centuries to fire India to an eight-wicket win over the West Indies in the first ODI in Thiruvananthapuram on Sunday. Both Kohli and Gill stole the show with their blistering centuries, making the light work of the chase. Chasing a target of 296, Shubman Gill gave India an aggressive start, racing to 110 with the help of 13 fours and one six.
At the other end, Virat Kohli was at his imperious best. The veteran batter remained unbeaten on 139 off 88, guiding India home in 41.4 overs. Kohli’s knock features 10 fours and nine sixes. Notably, this was Virat Kohli’s 55th ODI hundred as he continues to play masterclass innings match after match. During his knock, Kohli also became only the second batter after Sachin Tendulkar to cross 15,000 ODI runs. He also reached the milestone faster than Tendulkar.
Earlier, West Indies began strongly after being put to bat. Justin Greaves anchored the innings with an impressive 101, stitching a 135-run opening stand with John Campbell, who scored 62 runs. Meanwhile, India fought back through Kuldeep Yadav. The left-arm spinner ripped through the middle order with a superb four-wicket haul. Amid the late-innings surge, Amir Jangoo slammed an unbeaten 58 to take West Indies to 295/7 in 50 overs.
