“He will have to wait for his opportunity”: Gautam Gambhir on young star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has lauded batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and revealed why the young star was not immediately rushed into India’s playing XI despite being in superb form. Sooryavanshi has already enjoyed a remarkable start to his international career, but he has had limited opportunities in the national team. The teenager earned a national call-up following a run of tremendously standout performances at the Indian Premier League 2026, where he plundered 776 runs.
"It was a new experience for me as well. Yes, he was in good form, but I made him understand that sometimes, because of the players who have done well for a long time, he will have to wait for his opportunity," Gambhir told JioStar's Follow the Blues.
"If Vaibhav plays today, then it's going to be a tough conversation between me and whoever we leave out, whether it's Abhishek or whether it's Sanju. So, we can't suddenly ignore a combination that has created such an impact over the last one and a half or two years, and after three or four failures, drop them and play a young player who is very talented, who is also in very good form,” Gambhir said.
Earlier this year, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi made history, becoming the youngest Indian to feature in international cricket. He was only 15 years and 99 days old when he made his T20I debut against England, surpassing the previous record held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Though he endured frustrating form against England, Sooryavanshi fired a memorable innings against Zimbabwe to become the youngest player ever to score a half-century in men’s international cricket. He reached the milestone at just 15 years and 118 days. Recently, he was part of India's squad that won the gold medal at the Asian Games 2026 in Japan.
