Smriti Mandhana has been appointed as India's all-format captain, succeeding Harmanpreet Kaur, who quit the position after a tremendously successful tenure spanning about ten years. The appointment comes just hours after Harmanpreet Kaur decided to step down as India’s captain across all formats on Tuesday.

Notably, for much of Harmanpreet's time at the helm, Mandhana served as her deputy and carries massive experience. Now, she has a big responsibility of guiding India in Tests, ODIs and T20Is. She has already captained the side in 18 T20Is and four ODIs and has also proved her leadership skills in the WPL, having guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to Women's Premier League titles in 2024 and 2026.

“To be given the responsibility of leading India is a very special honour. Representing India has always meant a great deal to me, and to now have the opportunity to lead the team is something I will value deeply,” Mandhana said.

"I would also like to acknowledge Harmanpreet and the contribution she has made as captain over the years. She has led the team with great commitment and has been an important part of our journey.

"I understand the responsibility that comes with this role and look forward to working with the team, learning along the way and giving my best to take Indian Cricket forward.”

Her captaincy will begin with India’s upcoming assignment against Zimbabwe, where they will play three T20Is and as many ODIs. The series will begin on 16 October in Raipur. Meanwhile, the squads for the Zimbabwe series have also been revealed.

India’s T20I Squad: Smriti Mandhana (c), Shafali Verma, Niki Prasad, Harmanpreet Kaur, Anushka Sharma, Richa Ghosh, G Kamalini, Deepti Sharma, Prema Rawat, Sree Charani, Nandni Sharma, Kranti Gaud, Arundhati Reddy, Jintimani Kalita, Minnu Mani
