In a massive development, Dhananjaya de Silva has stepped down as Sri Lanka’s Test captain, bringing an end to a tenure that spanned more than two years. He was handed Sri Lanka’s Test captaincy back in January 2024.

“It’s my genuine opinion that the mantle should go down to the next generation,” de Silva said in a letter addressed to Sri Lanka's selection committee.

Dhananjaya de Silva, however, will continue to be part of the team, having already played 69 Tests and scored 4431 runs. He has 13 centuries and 20 half-centuries to his name.

The CEO of Sri Lanka Cricket, Ashley de Silva, thanked him for his leadership. Notably, Dhananjaya led Sri Lanka in 18 Tests after taking over the captaincy from Dimuth Karunaratne.

“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes him the very best for the remainder of his career and thanks him for the leadership he provided to our Test team."
