“Virat was a bit bitter about the way…”: Ex-Indian player shares thoughts Kohli’s shock Test retirement

Indian superstar Virat Kohli’s decision to retire from Test cricket came as a big shock last year in May because Kohli had been a cornerstone of India’s batting attack for a long time, and his decision to suddenly call time on an incredible 14-year career ahead of India’s Test tour of England raised a lot of questions.
Meanwhile, former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer believes the circumstances surrounding Kohli’s departure could have been handled more thoughtfully, asserting that the veteran batter may have been left disappointed by the way events unfolded. Kohli’s retirement came after a period of uncertainty over his future in the longest format. There was speculation about his plans that Kohli had reportedly been keen to continue playing Test cricket and was preparing for the England series as well. However, it all was put to rest with Kohli announcing his departure from the longest format.
“It felt like Virat was a bit bitter about the way he was treated. A player like Virat brings people to the ground. He has such a following. He definitely could have played more Test cricket. Till we hear it from Virat’s mouth, we won’t know. He was preparing for the England tour,” Wasim Jaffer said on his YouTube channel.
Moreover, Kohli had also turned out for Delhi in a Ranji Trophy match in January 2025, showing his willingness to continue playing domestic cricket. As per reports, Kohli was left disappointed with the situation and informed the selectors that he did not wish to be part of India’s upcoming England tour.
As of now, Kohli only plays ODIs and is looking to represent India at the ODI World Cup 2027. Notably, Kohli had ended his Test career as India's fourth-highest Test run scorer.
