Mohammed Shami has made his intentions clear amid questions over his continued absence from the Indian cricket team, insisting that his only focus is to perform whenever he gets an opportunity. The experienced fast bowler delivered an impressive performance for Bengal in their opening match of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season against Delhi, picking up 4 wickets for 30 runs.

Speaking at the press conference, Shami responded to criticism surrounding his fitness and bowling rhythm, making it clear that outside opinions would not affect his approach to the game. “I'm on the ground, I'm playing, and I'm playing wherever I'm given a chance. The rest is your job,” Shami said. He further added that he no longer wants to engage with such criticism, emphasising that his responsibility is to keep playing and performing on the field. Shami also expressed happiness over Bhuvneshwar Kumar's return to the Indian team after a 4 years absence. Praising his fellow pacer's performances in the Indian Premier League, Shami said players who work hard and demonstrate their ability deserve opportunities. “I'm happy for him because this has come after such a long time,” Shami said, adding that every deserving player should get a chance to prove themselves.

Against Delhi, Shami dismissed Yash Dhull, Ayush Doseja, Hrithik Shokeen and Divij Mehra. Hrithik Shokeen top-scored for Delhi with 56 runs off 98 balls, while Bengal's Akash Deep claimed 3 wickets and Mukesh Kumar took one. Amir Ghani also contributed with 3 wickets. Shami last represented India in the 2025 Champions Trophy final. Although his omission from the national setup has raised questions about his international future, his latest domestic performance shows that he remains determined to make the most of every opportunity. For now, the veteran pacer appears ready to let his performances do the talking as he continues to work towards a possible return to the Indian team.
