Indian women are gearing up to embrace an aggressive brand of approach as they gear up to take on Zimbabwe in a three-match T20I series, starting on October 16 in Raipur. This bilateral T20I series against Zimbabwe will serve as an important platform for India in their preparation for the Women’s Champions Trophy, set to be played next year in February.

Moreover, the T20Is will be followed by ODI matches, giving the squad an opportunity to strengthen their combinations. Meanwhile, for the players, according to Shafali, the focus will be on playing with freedom while remaining mindful of the match situation and the demands of international cricket.

“First of all, in T20 cricket, we have to play a fearless brand of cricket with smartness as well until the Champions Trophy. We have done lots of meetings so everyone knows what to do. We are just trying to just keep going series by series,” Shafali said at the press conference.

The series is also a maiden assignment for Smriti Mandhana, who was recently named the captain of team India across all formats, succeeding Harmanpreet Kaur, who decided to step down from the position. Meanwhile, Shafali Verma, who serves as India’s vice-captain, lauded Harmanpreet Kaur for her achievements as a captain.

“Harman provided a lot of growth to women’s cricket, and the way it has shaped it is all because of her. So just thanks to her,” Shafali said.

India head into the first T20I against Zimbabwe on the back of victories in the Asia Cup and Asian Games, with Mandhana also being in red-hot form.
