Chinmay Sutar creates history with 400-Run knock in Ranji Trophy

Mizoram batter Chinmay Sutar created history in the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 after scoring a brilliant 400 runs against Nagaland in Dimapur on Monday. His outstanding innings helped Mizoram reach 581/9 on Day 2 and placed him among the greatest individual scorers in the history of the tournament. With this achievement, Sutar became only the second batter in Ranji Trophy history to score 400 runs in a single innings. The first player to reach this milestone was Maharashtra's Bhausaheb Nimbalkar, who scored an unbeaten 443 against Kathiawar in 1948.

Sutar now holds the second-highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history, behind Nimbalkar's record-breaking 443 not out. Former India opener Prithvi Shaw is third on the list, having scored 379 runs for Mumbai against Assam during the 2022-23 season. Sutar's achievement is even more special because he has joined a select group of batters who have scored 400 or more runs in a single innings in first-class cricket. He is now among an elite list that includes legendary batters such as Brian Lara and Don Bradman.

Interestingly, Sutar's cricket journey has moved quickly in recent months. He made his List A debut for Mumbai against Maharashtra in the Vijay Hazare Trophy in January this year. However, his first appearance did not go as planned, as he was run out after scoring just two runs. He later made his first-class debut for Mizoram in the opening match of the current season. Sutar scored 35 runs in the first innings against Manipur before making a strong comeback with 99 runs in the second innings.
