Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's selection remains uncertain as Kotak backs India openers

India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak has kept the suspense alive over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's chances of playing in the second T20I against New Zealand. With Ishan Kishan ruled out due to injury, the 15-year-old batting sensation could be an option, but Kotak has backed current openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. The second T20I will be played at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Saturday. Kishan suffered a low-grade right adductor strain during India's four-wicket victory in the opening match. The BCCI medical team is monitoring his progress.
Sooryavanshi, who has been on the sidelines since the Asian Games, is among the possible options for the upcoming match. However, Kotak stressed that selection decisions must be made in the team's best interest rather than in response to social media demands. "There is a lot of speculation on social media about the three openers. Sometimes social media should also appreciate that the team management's decisions are for the good of the team. People want to pick their own XI, but it doesn't work like that," Kotak said ahead of the second T20I.
Kotak Praises Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma
Kotak also praised Samson for his attacking performance in the series opener. Samson smashed 67 off just 33 balls, while Abhishek Sharma scored 29 off 12 deliveries. Their 93-run opening partnership gave India a strong start in the chase. Kotak described Samson as an outstanding, power-packed player and praised both openers for their fearless approach under pressure. He explained that attacking from the beginning is not easy, as batters often worry about losing their wickets and getting dropped after a few low scores. However, he was impressed by the confidence and mental strength shown by the Indian openers.
The coach said their ability to combine power, talent and positive intent while controlling their minds was remarkable. With Kishan unavailable for the second T20I, attention will remain on India's opening combination. While Sooryavanshi could be considered, Kotak's comments suggest that Samson and Abhishek continue to have the team's confidence ahead of the Christchurch match.
