Tim David eyes 2027 ODI World Cup as Australia star returns to 50-Over cricket

Australia's T20 star Tim David is set to return to domestic 50-over cricket for Tasmania as he looks to strengthen his chances of playing in the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa. Tasmania coach Jeff Vaughan confirmed that the 30-year-old wants to improve his skills in the format and make himself available for Australia's ODI team. David is expected to feature against Victoria, with Tasmania also considering him for upcoming matches, depending on his franchise commitments and international schedule.
David has not played a List A match since his four ODI appearances for Australia in 2023, when he replaced the injured Glenn Maxwell during a series against South Africa. His previous domestic List A appearance for Tasmania came in November 2021. He also enjoyed an impressive One-Day Cup campaign for Surrey in England, scoring two centuries and an unbeaten 52 in eight innings.
David's possible return to ODI cricket could be important for Australia, who have struggled to find consistent finishing power following Maxwell's retirement. The team has faced difficulties in the closing stages of innings, including during their recent ODI series defeat against South Africa. David is widely known for his powerful hitting in T20 cricket, and the Australian selectors will be interested in seeing how he adapts his attacking style to the longer format.
Vaughan confirmed that David would likely bat around No. 6, playing a similar role to the one he performs in T20 cricket. The plan is to bring him into the innings around the 30th over so he can provide a strong finish.
The Tasmania coach also said David could bowl a few overs and contribute in the field. His role will depend on the match situation, with the team aiming to use his power-hitting ability when it can have the greatest impact.
Tasmania are also considering David for a match against Queensland on November 16, although his availability could depend on Australia's ODI series against England on November 13, 15 an
