Olympic Qualifiers slated for early 2028

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has unpacked an extensive international cricket schedule, covering the period between the 2027 and 2031 ODI World Cups. The schedule also concerns the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic qualifiers, the 2029 World Test Championship final and the men's and women's T20 World Cups in 2028. As per the calendar, the men's and women's Olympic qualifying tournaments are set to be held in January and February 2028.

The 2029 World Test Championship final, meanwhile, is scheduled to be held in England from June 8 to 12. The notable development has been the rescheduling of the Olympic qualifying tournaments. Earlier, the ICC had planned to conduct the men's and women's qualifiers in 2027, but both events have now been shifted to January and February in 2028.

As of now, the calendar includes 24 events across senior men's, senior women's and Under-19 cricket, having 12 men's tournaments, seven women's competitions and five age-group events, with qualifying tournaments also included.

According to the ICC’s qualification pathway, few teams will gain direct entry in the women's competition. In the women's competition, Australia, India, South Africa and Great Britain have secured qualification as the highest-ranked teams from their respective continents, based on performances at the T20 World Cup held earlier in 2026. The United States will also benefit from a revised direct-entry arrangement as the host nation.

However, the USA women's team must meet the ICC's ranking requirement by December 31, 2026, to seal direct entry as hosts. If they fail to do so, then an additional qualification place will be determined through the Women's Champions Trophy standings instead of the T20I rankings as originally proposed. The USA men's team, currently ranked 13th in T20Is, have secured their direct Olympic entry under the current criteria.
