Conway, Finn Allen decline New Zealand central contract
Two of New Zealand's most prominent cricketers, Devon Conway and Finn Allen have made significant decisions to decline New Zealand's central contracts to focus on franchise cricket. However, Conway has signed a casual contract and will be available for all international matches, but won’t be available for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka in January. Conway was recently named in New Zealand’s Test squad for Afghanistan and Sri Lanka series. Conway is slated to make himself available at the SA20, due to which he will not be able to participate in New Zealand’s white-ball series against Sri Lanka.
They both have become the latest players to take this decision. Conway and Allen have joined other New Zealand players Kane Williamson, Lockie Ferguson, Trent Boult and Adam Milne in turning down contracts.
"Firstly, I'd like to thank New Zealand Cricket for their support through this process. The decision to move away from a central playing contract isn't one I've taken lightly, but I believe it is the best for me and my family at this present time. Playing for the Blackcaps is still the pinnacle for me and I'm hugely passionate about representing New Zealand and winning games of international cricket,” Conway said.
NZC chief executive Scott Weenink said, “We're delighted with Devon's decision to commit to the Blackcaps - he's a quality player who's made a strong contribution to the team over the past few years. In the current environment it's important to have flexibility in our system to navigate some of the challenges posed by franchise cricket - and this is another example of how we're working hard to retain our best players."
