“That is the way he is”: Ganguly defends Gambhir
Following India’s disappointing series defeats against Sri Lanka in ODIs and New Zealand in Tests, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has come under severe criticism. Gambhir recently also garnered a lot of opprobrium for his blunt response to former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting’s remarks on Virat Kohli’s form.
Reacting to Ponting’s remarks, Gambhir had said that Ponting should focus on his team. While the critics have come out in full force, but former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has urged for a more measured perspective on Gambhir’s leadership. Ganguly also emphasised that one should let Gambhir be the way he wants to be.
“All I will say is let him be. I saw some criticism on what he said in the press conference. It is the way he is. Let him be. When he won the IPL, he was the same, you were going gaga over him. Just because he has lost three test matches and a one-day series against Sri Lanka, the straight talk has not been looked at nicely. But that is the way he is,” Ganguly told Revzsports.
Ganguly also defended Gambhir’s reaction to Ponting’s remarks by saying that there was nothing wrong in what Gambhir said.
“Australians, from the time I have watched cricket, they have been tough for you. They have played their cricket that way, whether it was [Steve] Waugh, [Ricky] Ponting or [Matthew] Hayden. So, there is nothing wrong with what Gambhir has said. That is the way he is and he fights, he competes so let us give him a chance. It has just been two-three months and you are passing a judgement on him,” he added.
